Apparently someone swiped my debit card number. Ran a few charges under $50.00 to a fake dating website and a fake credit verification site. Thought maybe I or my wife had lost the card at some point. Nope, opened my wallet at it was right there with me. So it could have been read on any of my errands from Monday: O’Reilly’s, Lowes, Safeway, gas pump, who knows.

So I have to go get a new card at my credit union, make sure any of my auto-pay bills that are tied to the previous card get changed to the new card. Minor inconveniences, but still very annoying. Lots going on right now, anything added to my heap just pisses me off.

We had that happen just recently with our credit card. At least Chase flagged the purchases and denied them.

This is why I avoid paying using my debit card as much as I can when I’m out and about. I always do credit card or Apple Pay just because the risk to the account is much less. My friend got their debit card stolen and it took the bank almost two weeks to deposit the money back into their checking account. This can be a huge issue if the amounts are in the hundreds of dollars.

Yeah I was lucky in that they were small purchases on blacklisted websites.

Definitely! For my friend it was closer to $800 which is what prompted me to put all kinds of alerts on my Chase account and a threshold of $5 so if someone so much as withdraws $5 or swipes my card for $5 I get a push notification right away.

I’ve had this happen twice now. I think it’s part of the huge data breaches at places like Target etc... or that shady AF pizza joint I went to that one time.

Same here. The fraud protections on credit cards are much better and they’re not directly tied to your bank account where a fraudulent purchase can tie up all your money.

I use my debit card for certain auto-pay bills that don’t do a direct ACH transfer, and at my favorite supermarket that only accepts debit, not credit, cards to keep their transaction fees lower and pass the savings on to YOU!

Often, whoever swiped the number sits on it for a while. So they could have had your card for any number of weeks before running some test charges. This has happened to me twice and it is annoying and makes things miserable during the transition to the new card. Glad it was caught pretty quickly though.

I rarely use the debit card for anything but withdrawing money of buying gas at an AMPM. Visa is my friend because they can afford to give away money to thieves.

Anytime I try to use one of my card at Target it immediatly get flagged for fraud and shut down until I call them. It took me three times before I knew for sure what was happening.

Also: regarding paying with credit cards, what’s the magic number I need to keep paying off my balance towards? If the balance is too high, my report will say stuff like excessive balance to allowance ratio (I butchered that term there). But if it’s too low, it’ll say not enough debt history lol

According to creditkarma 0-29% of available credit has the highest impact for increasing your score. They actually have it split into 0-9 and 10-29 but they use the same color green!

Apparently having credit inquiries removed increases your score also? I just noticed when I was on the app my credit union removed and inquiry so my score went up?

Isn’t keeping any credit card balance at all annoyingly expensive and detrimental to credit rating? I never leave anything unpaid.

This! Use a credit card for monthly expenses/shopping. You earn points in a hurry, and if you pay it off every month you won’t pay any interest. We generally spend enough to get 3-4 free flights per year.

The best part? If someone jacks it online or in person, it’s the bank’s money their spending, not yours.

It’s a great buffer between your money and thieves. I try to pay everything via CC but some companies charge 3% for CC payments so I understand why some people pay via debit. I’m currently sitting on $2100 in rewards points that I will be using for a trip to Amsterdam this summer.

Who knows what those credit card company algorithms want. I pay off all my balances and my score has increased and dropped randomly for seemingly no reason. I had been hovering at 804 for almost a year and it has now dipped back to 790-ish with literally no change in spending or new accounts.

I use my primary cc for business and personal. We get dinged for excessive utilization even though the damn thing is paid in full every month. How in the eff can that be excessive utilization? I was told to get another cc or 2 in order to fix that, so we did — no effect. I just gave up at that point.

Almost all of the younger folks I worked with used debit for their everyday purchases. I don’t know whether it’s because I didn’t have a real cc to use until I started working and thus paid cash for everything (debit cards were just referred to as “money cards” in those days because you could only use them at AMTs!) or I like to yell at clouds, but my two options remain cash and cc.

Mine got skimmed in Arizona last year. I spent $4,700 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam before my bank thought to give me a buzz.
